Chapter 1
Why forage
Foraging is the skill of finding things on the ground. In Build 42 it went from "snack finder" to "the start of every crafting chain."
In old versions, foraging mostly found berries. Now it finds the clay that makes pots and furnaces. The flint that makes stone tools. The stone that builds walls. The dogbane that becomes rope. If you want to craft your way to a forge, you start here.
Food
Berries, mushrooms, wild plants, insects for fishing bait. Free calories when the shops run dry.
Medicine
Herbs that fight sickness. Plants you turn into poultices for wounds.
Materials
Stones, sticks, clay, flint, limestone, dogbane. The raw stuff of every workshop.
Animal clues
Search Mode is also how you track deer and rabbits. That has its own guide.
The whole loop in 6 steps
- PrepareUncover your face. Pick a bright, dry day.
- Pick a zoneDifferent ground grows different things.
- SearchTurn on Search Mode. Choose a focus.
- Walk slowlyCrouch and zigzag across the area.
- CollectPick up what you need. Discard the rest.
- Use itEat, craft, or build.
Why it matters early
Foraging levels fast, costs nothing, and makes almost no noise. It is the safest skill in the game to train on day 1.
Chapter 2
Search Mode, step by step
Nothing appears until you switch Search Mode on. This is the part every new player misses.
Open Investigate Area
Click the magnifying glass icon on the left side of the screen. A window called Investigate Area opens. It shows a little picture of the land around you, the sun and the weather.
Read the picture
Hover your mouse over the picture. It tells you what zone you are in and what you can expect to find here. Hover over the eye icon to see your search radius. That number is how far around you the game will look.
Enable Search Mode
Click the Enable Search Mode button. An eye appears above your survivor's head. Now the game checks the ground around you as you move.
Choose a focus
The focus list tells the game what you care about. At level 0 you have only a few choices. More unlock as you level up. Chapter 6 explains them all.
Walk and watch
Move slowly through the zone. When the game finds something, a question mark appears on the ground with an arrow. Walk to it.
Pick up or discard
Right-click the find. Choose to pick it up, or to discard it. Either way, you get Foraging XP. So never walk past a find. Even junk teaches you something.
Watch out: animal tracks are a different focus
Deer and rabbit clues only show with the Animal Tracks focus. They do not appear during normal foraging. See the Hunting guide for that.
Secret: Search Mode finds lost stuff too
Dropped your keys? Cannot see a tiny item on the floor? Turn on Search Mode. It highlights small objects near you. It can also reveal hidden stashes in some houses.
Chapter 3
Build your forager
Foraging levels fast on its own. The best picks are the ones that make your search circle bigger or keep you from eating poison.
Best picks on the character screen
Park Ranger (job)
+1 Foraging and a bigger search radius. Walks through forests 75% faster. Better at finding herbs, wild plants and berries.
Bushcrafter (trait, 8 points)
+1 Foraging, Carving, Knapping and Maintenance. You already know how to spot poison and make poultices. The full wilderness package.
Herbalist (trait, 4 points)
+1 Foraging. You can find medicine herbs, spot poisonous food and make poultices.
Eagle Eyed (trait, 4 points)
A much bigger search circle. Bigger circle means more finds, and more finds mean faster levels.
Outdoorsy (trait, 2 points)
A small radius boost. Fewer scratches from trees. Fewer colds. Cheap and useful. It used to be called Outdoorsman.
Hunter (trait, 8 points)
Better foraging plus Tracking, Sneaking, Aiming and Butchering. The hunter-forager build.
Watch out: point costs change
The game makers still tune traits and jobs. Always read the numbers on your own character screen.
Secret: one magazine replaces a trait
The Magazine: Wilderness Survival teaches you to spot poisonous berries and mushrooms, and to make poultices. Find it and you get most of the Herbalist trait for free. Bushcrafters start with it already read.
Books and tapes
Foraging is a normal skill, so its 5 books give the full boost. Read the one for your level before a long search.
| Book volume | Works at levels | XP boost |
|---|---|---|
| Foraging I | 0 to 2 | 3 times |
| Foraging II | 3 to 4 | 5 times |
| Foraging III | 5 to 6 | 8 times |
| Foraging IV | 7 to 8 | 12 times |
| Foraging V | 9 to 10 | 16 times |
TV and VHS tapes also give Foraging XP, but only for your first 3 levels. Watch them while the power is still on.
Chapter 4
Your search circle
The game only looks at the ground inside a circle around you. Everything about foraging comes back to making that circle bigger.
What sets the size
- Your skill. Each Foraging level adds about 0.7 tiles.
- Your traits and job. Eagle Eyed, Park Ranger and others add more.
- Light. Darkness shrinks the circle hard. In deep darkness it can drop to about 1.5 tiles.
- Weather. Rain and fog shrink it.
- Your face. Covering your head, face and eyes together can cut the circle by 75%.
- Your mood. Panic and stress can shrink it by up to 95%.
Try it: how big is your circle?
This toy shows the idea, not the game's exact numbers.
How you move changes it too
| How you move | Effect on searching |
|---|---|
| Standing still and aiming | Best. About a third bigger circle. |
| Crouching | A little bigger. Also quiet. |
| Walking | Normal. |
| Sprinting | Search Mode switches off. |
Watch out: masks and helmets blind you
A gas mask or a full helmet is great in a fight. It is terrible for foraging. Take it off before you search. Put it back on before you fight.
Secret: 2 items beat the weather
A light source removes the darkness penalty entirely. An umbrella removes almost all of the rain penalty. Carry both and you can forage at night in a storm.
Secret: forage hungry
A hungry survivor is better at spotting food. Hunger can boost food finds by up to 50%. Do your berry run before breakfast.
Chapter 5
Where to look: zones
The ground you stand on decides what you can find. Match the zone to the thing you need.
The Investigate Area window names your zone. Here is what each one is good for.
| Zone | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Forest | Firewood, medicinal plants, and "forest rarities" | Some items exist only here. Also the best rabbit trapping zone. |
| Forest | Berries, mushrooms, sticks, clay | The all-round zone. Most of the map's woods count as this. |
| Vegetation | Wild plants, insects | Bushy edges and overgrown lots. |
| Farmland | Crops and their seeds, worms after rain | Crop finds also give you seeds to plant. |
| Town | Trash and junk | Junk sounds useless. Nails, bottles and rags are not. |
| Trailer Park | Trash | The trashiest zone of all. |
| Roads and parking lots | Stones, and often clay | Stones are about 4 times as common here as anywhere else. |
Secret: look at the ground, not just the zone
Finds appear on matching features. Trash shows up on trash piles. Stones show up on cracked road sections. Walk the cracks, not the smooth tarmac.
Secret: Build 42 has finer biomes than the old game
Under the hood, forests are split into types like birch, primary and acidic forest. Each has its own list. If a forest gives you nothing useful, walk to a different-looking patch of woods and try again.
Chapter 6
Focus: telling the game what you want
A focus makes one kind of thing more likely to appear. Everything else becomes less likely. It is a trade, not free loot.
You unlock more focuses as you level up. Until a category unlocks, its items are lumped into a bigger group, like "Food".
| Focus | Unlocks at level | What it finds |
|---|---|---|
| Firewood | 0 | Sticks, branches, logs |
| Stones | 0 | Stones, and players report clay too |
| Berries | 3 | Blackberries, blueberries and more |
| Mushrooms | 3 | All mushrooms |
| Insects | 4 | Worms, crickets, grasshoppers. Fishing and trap bait. |
| Wild Herbs | 4 | Cooking herbs |
| Wild Plants | 4 | Edible plants, dogbane and other fiber plants |
| Trash | 4 | Junk that is often useful |
| Animals | 5 | Frogs, snails, eggs, small creatures |
| Crops | 5 | Vegetables, plus their seeds |
| Medicinal Plants | 6 | Healing herbs (Herbalists find these earlier) |
| Fruits | 7 | Wild fruit |
Focus picker: what do you need?
Secret: no focus is a good focus
In a new area, search with no focus first. You see the full menu of what lives there. Then pick a focus for the thing you need.
Secret: focus does not help every category equally
Some things get a big boost from focus. Others barely change. The official wiki says the bonus is not the same for all categories. Try it and see.
Chapter 7
Food from the wild
The woods will feed you. They will also poison you if you are careless.
Berries
- Found all year. Most common from May to July.
- You find 1 to 4 at a time.
- Always safe: Blackberries, Blueberries, Winter Berries, Beauty Berries.
- Always poison: Holly Berries.
- Sometimes poison: plain "Berries". The risk drops as your skill rises.
Mushrooms
- Love rain and night. Search after a storm.
- Any mushroom can be poisonous.
- You can only tell at Foraging 5, or with the Herbalist trait, or after reading Wilderness Survival.
Watch out: unknown mushrooms and berries
Until you can see the word "poisonous" on the item, treat every plain berry and mushroom as a gamble. Eating a poisonous one makes you very sick. Keep the safe berries. Discard the rest for XP.
Wild plants, herbs and crops
- Wild plants are edible greens. Most common from May to July. Rose Hips peak in autumn instead.
- Wild herbs make cooking better.
- Crops found on farmland come with seeds. That is how a forager becomes a farmer.
Bugs and small animals
Worms, crickets and grasshoppers are fishing bait and trap bait. Frogs, snails and eggs are food. Insects are far more common at night and after rain.
Watch out: winter is bare
From December to February, most berries, mushrooms, insects, eggs and small animals cannot be found at all. Only a few winter berries survive. Forage food hard in autumn and store it.
Chapter 8
Wild medicine
No pharmacy? The forest floor has a backup plan.
Who can find it
Medicinal plants get their own focus at Foraging 6. But you can find them earlier by luck. The Herbalist and Bushcrafter traits, and the Wilderness Survival magazine, let you find and use them from level 0.
2 kinds of plant medicine
Herbs you eat
These treat whole-body problems, like sickness or pain. Just eat them.
Plants you make into poultices
These treat a specific wound. Grind the plant with a Mortar and Pestle. Then apply the poultice to the injury.
Make a poultice
Herbal knowledge is needed. Put the medicinal plant and a Mortar and Pestle in your inventory. Craft the poultice. Then open your health window and apply it to the hurt body part.
Secret: night and rain grow medicine
Medicinal plants are far more common at night and in rain. With a light source and an umbrella, a rainy night is the best time to stock up.
Chapter 9
Materials that build everything
This is the new heart of foraging. Each material starts a crafting chain.
| Material | How to get it | What it becomes |
|---|---|---|
| Stones | Stones focus, level 0. Best on roads and parking lots. | Stone tools, spears, walls, furnaces. |
| Sticks and branches | Firewood focus, level 0. Deep forest is best. | Fires, spears, handles, drying racks. |
| Clay | Foraging (more in rain), or dug from deposits. See Chapter 10. | Pots, crucibles, molds, kilns, furnaces, cement. |
| Flint Nodules | Forage them, or smash a mineral deposit with a club hammer. | Sharp flint flakes, then knapped stone tools. |
| Limestone | Forage it. It counts as a stone. | Turning iron into steel at an advanced furnace. |
| Hemp Dogbane | Wild Plants focus, level 4. | Twine, rope and burlap cloth. |
| Iron Ore | Foraging in forests. Rare. Needs Foraging 7. | Iron for blacksmithing. Most players use scrap metal instead. |
Watch out: the old "Flint" item is gone
Build 41 had a single Flint item. Build 42 removed it. Now you need Flint Nodules and the Knapping skill to make Sharp Flint Flakes. Old guides that say "find flint" are out of date.
Secret: mineral deposits are treasure
Some rocks on the ground are marked as mineral deposits. Hit one with a club hammer, sledgehammer or pickaxe to remove it. It breaks into several flint pieces and sharp flakes. Limestone deposits look pale yellow. Flint deposits are dark grey.
Secret: dogbane is the rope plant
2 dogbane plus a stick and a cutting tool twist into rope. Rope and twine gate a lot of building. A forager never runs out.
Chapter 10
The clay hunt
Clay is the single most-wanted material in Build 42. Kilns alone need 20 each. Here are all 3 ways to get it.
Way 1: dig a clay deposit
The fastest way. Walk along a river or lake edge. Look for a patch of ground with a different, reddish color. That is a clay deposit. Right-click it and collect.
Way 2: forage it
Clay shows up as a normal foraging find in forests and farmland, in clumps of 2 to 4. It is more common in rain and less common in snow. Many players report that the Stones focus on roads turns up clay too.
Way 3: loot it
Sacks of clay can be found as loot. Players report them in school buildings. Each sack holds 8.
Watch out: an old save may have no deposits
Clay deposits are placed when a world is made. A save started on an early Build 42 version, or a converted save, may have none near the water. Foraging still works.
Secret: clay makes cement
2 clay, 10 liters of water and some sand (or 50 grass cuttings or hay) make a bucket of clay cement. That bucket is what primitive furnaces and forges are built with.
Chapter 11
Weather, time and seasons
Bad weather shrinks your circle. But some finds love bad weather. Plan your trips around this table.
| Condition | More of | Less of |
|---|---|---|
| Rain | Mushrooms, medicinal plants, wild plants, worms, clay | Your search radius (fix: umbrella) |
| Just after rain | Mushrooms, medicinal plants, fishing bait | |
| Night | Mushrooms, medicinal plants, insects (a lot) | Your search radius (fix: a light) |
| Snow on the ground | Stones, berries, plants, worms | |
| Winter (Dec to Feb) | Firewood, winter berries | Most food, insects, eggs and animals vanish |
| Autumn | Firewood, Rose Hips | |
| May to July | Berries, wild plants |
Secret: the sandbox can make nature richer
Custom Sandbox has a setting called Nature's Abundance. Sandbox: Nature's Abundance It goes from Very Poor to Very Abundant. If you play a wilderness run, turn it up.
Chapter 12
Training plan: 0 to 10
You get XP every time you pick up or discard a find. So the plan is simple: find lots of things, fast, safely.
Levels 0 to 2: the road trick
Read Foraging I. Watch any outdoor TV or VHS. Then walk a quiet road with the Stones focus. Stones are everywhere on roads. Pick up what you can carry. Discard the rest. Every one is XP.
Levels 3 to 5: forest edges
Read Foraging II. Move to a forest edge near your base. Use no focus so everything counts. Crouch and zigzag. Take berries, sticks and clay. Discard everything else.
Levels 5 to 10: rainy nights with a light
Read the next book each time you hit its level. Now use the weather. A rainy night with a light source and an umbrella is a find-machine. Mushrooms, herbs and insects pile up.
Secret: a bigger circle levels you faster
Eagle Eyed and Park Ranger do not add levels. They add radius. More radius means more finds per minute, which means more XP per minute. Radius is the real training bonus.
Level by level: Foraging
The best single thing to do at each level. Read the matching book first when one exists.
| Level | Do this for most of your XP | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1 | Forage Firewood and Stones on any roadside | Level 0 focuses. Every pick-up is XP |
| 1 to 2 | Read Foraging I. Walk the forest edge daily | Radius grows 0.7 per level |
| 2 to 3 | Same walk. Pick up everything, even trash | XP comes on pick-up or discard, not on the item |
| 3 to 4 | Read Foraging II. Berries and Mushrooms focus unlocks | New categories mean new items per walk |
| 4 to 5 | Herbs, Insects, Wild Plants and Trash unlock | Four new focuses at 4. Rotate them |
| 5 to 6 | Read Foraging III. Crops and Animals focus, mushroom poison ID | Level 5 makes mushrooms safe |
| 6 to 7 | Medicinal focus unlocks. Forage the deep forest | Rarer items pay more |
| 7 to 8 | Read Foraging IV. Fruits focus unlocks | Orchards and forest fruit |
| 8 to 9 | Long deep-forest loops with a face cover off | Face cover cuts radius 75% |
| 9 to 10 | Read Foraging V. Same loops. Iron ore at 7 pays well | Ore and clay are the late-game reason to walk |

Tips, tricks and fixes
20 tips from the forest floor
Before you go
- Take off your mask, helmet and glasses.
- Read the book for your level.
- Go hungry. Hunger boosts food finds.
- Bring a light and an umbrella. Weather stops mattering.
- Empty your bag. Stones and clay weigh a lot.
While searching
- Crouch and zigzag. Never sprint.
- Use no focus in a new area. Then pick one.
- Discard junk instead of ignoring it. Discarding gives XP.
- Walk road cracks for stones. Walk river edges for clay.
- Search after rain for mushrooms and herbs.
- Search at night for insects and medicine, with a light.
- Keep the safe berries. Discard unknown ones until level 5.
- Save every worm and cricket. They are fishing bait.
- Pick up crops on farmland. They come with seeds.
Planning ahead
- Fill your pantry in autumn. Winter forests are empty.
- Hunt the Wilderness Survival magazine. It is worth a trait.
- Smash mineral deposits for flint. Keep a club hammer.
- Dig clay by the sackful. 8 per deposit.
- Gather dogbane in summer for rope all year.
- Iron Ore needs Foraging 7. Use scrap metal until then.
Fix-it table
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| I never find anything. | Search Mode is off, or it is dark, or your face is covered. | Click Enable Search Mode. Uncover your face. Search by day. |
| My circle is tiny. | Darkness, rain, panic or a mask. | Light, umbrella, calm down, uncover. |
| I only find junk. | You are in a town zone. | Walk to a forest or farm zone. |
| I cannot find clay. | Wrong zone, or no deposits in your save. | Try forests in rain, roads with Stones focus, or river edges with a sack and shovel. |
| I cannot find flint. | You are looking for the old item. | Look for Flint Nodules. Break mineral deposits. |
| Everything is poison. | Low skill, no herbal knowledge. | Reach level 5, or read Wilderness Survival, or take Herbalist. |
| No berries anywhere. | It is winter. | Wait for spring. Trap and fish instead. |
| The focus I want is greyed out. | Your level is too low. | Level up. The items still appear under a broader group. |
| Search Mode keeps turning off. | You sprinted. | Walk or crouch. |
| I cannot make a poultice. | No herbal knowledge, or no Mortar and Pestle. | Get the magazine or trait. Find a Mortar and Pestle. |

How sure are we?
Every fact here was checked in September 2026 for game version 42.20.4. The order of trust was: the official wiki first, then well-sourced fan guides, then player reports.
The game still gets updates. A few things may differ in your game:
- The exact numbers. Radius per level, the 75% face penalty, the 95% panic cap and the hunger bonus come from a fan guide that cites the official wiki's 42.18 page. Treat them as close, not exact.
- Focus unlock levels. From the same source. The official wiki confirms Berries and Mushrooms at level 3.
- Clay from the Stones focus. This is a player-tested trick, not an official rule.
- Clay sacks in schools. A single player report.
- Trait point costs. Confirmed on the official wiki, but they may change.
- Iron Ore at Foraging 7. Carried over from the Blacksmithing guide's ledger.
